Are you searching for a meaningful gift that won’t end up in a closet or discarded the week after the holidays? Consider giving hygiene items to a person in need, a prescription to an individual diagnosed with HIV /AIDS, or medical supplies for a sick dog.

For a second year a local group of volunteers bring a unique approach to enable generosity during the holiday season. Gifts That Give Hope features a shopping list of  “gift” items to fulfill the most basic needs of several area nonprofits. Here's how a fair works:

Rather than a tie or book, Grandpa or Uncle Bob could open a colorful card telling him the money spent on his gift is providing 500 lbs. of local produce for a needy person. Instead of receiving a fancy candle, your child's teacher or Cousin Sue will be honored to learn they are providing 20 meals for a homebound neighbor, an emergency vet exam for a pet in crisis, or tuition for an underprivileged child to participate in the Sailor Circus Sarasota.
